Background of the Study:
Youth gang activities have increasingly become a catalyst for urban insecurity in Uyo. Economic hardship, social marginalization, and the allure of gang culture contribute to the proliferation of youth gangs, resulting in heightened criminal activities and community instability (Ibrahim, 2023). The urban landscape in Uyo is marked by areas of concentrated poverty where gang recruitment is prevalent. These gangs often engage in illicit activities, including robbery, drug trafficking, and violence, undermining public safety and hindering socio-economic progress (Ukpe, 2024). This study critically examines the factors driving youth gang involvement and the resultant impact on urban security. By exploring the socio-economic, cultural, and political dimensions, the research seeks to understand the root causes of gang activity and assess current law enforcement and community interventions. The investigation employs both qualitative interviews with community leaders and quantitative crime data analysis to provide a comprehensive picture of urban insecurity in Uyo (Etuk, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Urban insecurity in Uyo is exacerbated by the prevalence of youth gang activities. These gangs contribute to rising crime rates and social unrest, posing significant challenges to community safety and effective law enforcement (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of targeted intervention strategies necessitates a focused study on the underlying causes and consequences of youth gang involvement (Ukpe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To identify the socio-economic factors contributing to youth gang activities.
  • To assess the impact of gang-related activities on urban security.
  • To recommend intervention strategies to mitigate gang-related insecurity.

Research Questions:

  • What socio-economic factors drive youth to join gangs in Uyo?
  • How do gang activities affect urban security and community safety?
  • What interventions can effectively reduce youth gang involvement?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Economic marginalization significantly influences youth gang recruitment.
  • H₂: Gang activities are strongly correlated with increased urban insecurity.
  • H₃: Community-based interventions can effectively reduce gang-related crimes.

Significance of the Study:
This study is pivotal in addressing urban insecurity by uncovering the causes of youth gang activities. Its findings will aid policymakers and community leaders in devising targeted interventions that enhance public safety and social cohesion (Etuk, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining youth gang activities and urban insecurity in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, focusing exclusively on the socio-economic and security aspects within this urban setting.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Youth Gang: An organized group of young individuals involved in criminal activities.
  • Urban Insecurity: The condition of heightened criminal activity and social instability in urban areas.
  • Intervention Strategies: Measures designed to reduce or prevent gang-related activities.
